Reining is a western riding competition where riders guide their horses through a precise pattern of circles spins and stops. This discipline originated from the moves that cattle horses make when working. The combinations are judged on their individual performances where points are either given or taken for each manoeuvre. Credit is given for smoothness, finesse, attitude, quickness and authority. Controlled speed in the pattern raises the level of difficulty and makes the reining horse exciting to watch.
Craig Johnson will be running reining clinics at Equidays and the NZ Reining Horse Association Reining competition will be held over the weekend in the western and horsemanship arena.
