Jody Hartstone

Jody Hartstone is a Grand Prix dressage rider and practitioner of Equitation Science based at Raglan in the Waikato.

Jody is best known as one of New Zealand’s best performed dressage riders, with four national titles and  three Horse of the Year show titles on her stallions Belmont Golden Boy, Landioso and Whisper.  Jody is also New Zealand’s most prolific winner of dressage derbies on borrowed horses, winning titles in Australia, South Africa and here in New Zealand.

Jody is in high demand lecturing at various international universities in the field of Equitation Science. Her specialities include breaking in or “Foundation training”, “the Sport horse”, and dealing with problems or “Conflict behaviours”.

Jody teaches the system taught to her by Dr Andrew McLean of the Australian Equine Behaviour Centre.  She is also the rider’s representative on the board of the International Society for Equitation Science (ISES).

“Training your dressage horse without conflict and confusion”

Grand Prix dressage rider Jody Hartstone will demonstrate the 10 basic responses your horse needs to develop from Preliminary level to Grand Prix.  Her demonstration will outline the Go, Stop, Turn and Yield signals and how these are trained in to become movements such as travers, half-pass, piaffe and passage.

Helping solve your horse’s issues in the dressage arena

Grand Prix dressage rider Jody Hartstone will demonstrate techniques that deal with the following common issues in dressage horses: Heavy horses that lean on the bit, Dull horses that don’t respond to the leg – sometimes termed “Lazy”, Horse’s that are tense and spooky.

Floating issues

“It's not about Leadership – it's about Leading”

New Zealand’s authority on Equitation Science Jody Hartstone will demonstrate how to deal with float loading issues including refusing to load, running off the float, scrambling etc.

Jody will show how good loading skills are not about dominance or respect from your horse, but simply about the quality of the horse’s leading responses.

Mounting issues and clipper shy horses

"It’s not about gaining Respect – it’s about training Responses”

New Zealand’s authority on Equitation Science Jody Hartstone will demonstrate how to train your horse to come up to the mounting block, not swing away, and wait calmly and obediently for you to mount. 

She will also demonstrate the technique of overshadowing to habituate your horse to clippers, needles and other potentially frightening stimuli.
